The concept of Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery
introduces highly refined techniques and approaches to the
Neurosurgical treatment of brain and spinal diseases. Major
advances in Neurological Surgery have occurred over the past
30 years consequent to the development of Micro-neurosurgical
Instrumentation and procedures, the improvement and reliability
of diagnostic neuro-imaging methods (MRI and CT scanning),
and the availability of sophisticated anesthetic techniques.
Currently,
the field of neurosurgery is enjoying the ‘next step’ in
the evolution of neurosurgical capabilities with the introduction
of Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery techniques. While the
operations still require the opening of the cranium (i.e.
skull) for brain operations or accessing the spinal canal
(for neuro-related spine operations), these openings for
exposure are much smaller than ever previously contemplated.
Limited exposure means limited "injury" to surrounding
tissue. This usually results in the general reduction of
morbidity and mortality related to the operations, which
certainly affect quality of life of patients and their families.
Secondary benefits include:
reduction in post-operative pain;
reduction in the length
of stay in the hospital;
reduction in time to return to
work; and
reduction in overall cost.
The ability of the proven CompuFlo® system to differentiate
tissue type and precisely control infusion of drugs in-situ
has a significant advantage to drug administration during
surgical procedures. Additionally, the CompuFlo system can
also precisely regulate and control the aspiration of fluids,
specific bodily tissues and/or foreign materials from fragile
tissues, such as those that comprise the brain and the associated
nerves of the central and peripheral nervous system. The
CompuFlo system technology is capable of identifying specific
anatomic locations, thus enabling delicate micro-surgical
procedures to be performed with greater precision and care
resulting in reduced risk of bodily tissue damage. It is
these innovative technical attributes that Milestone believes
will enable the CompuFlo system technology to dramatically
improve clinical outcomes and ease of use for specific procedures
performed during Neurosurgery.
